In the small hours of 23 April 1918, the old British submarine C3 rammed a viaduct at Zeebrugge as part of an operation to trap German U-boats in their base. Full of tons of high explosives, the boat was detonated after her small crew departed. C3’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Richard Sandford, was awarded the Victoria Cross, one of 14 VC’s awarded to members of the RN's submarine service in the last century.
