The story behind the painting...

As depicted so wonderfully in Wolfang Petersen's film 'Das Boot' , German U-Boats would occasionally (and usually accidentally...!) meet in mid-Atlantic when running on the surface. Such a chance meeting is depicted here, as two 'Type IX' U-Boats cross paths allowing a brief exchange of conversation in heavy weather.
