In the Battle of the Atlantic, the period from July to October 1940 was known by the German U-boat crews as ‘The Happy Time’ with convoys, once detected, virtually defenceless against them. The picture shows two U-boats passing in the Atlantic and exchanging greetings, as one heads for base on completion of a successful patrol, while the other starts out on its deadly mission.
