Subject: HMS Arethusa and a U-class submarine defending Valetta, Malta against German Aerial attack.

The story behind the painting...


During the Second World War Malta was an hugely  important naval arena in the Mediterranean.

Hundreds of German aerial attacks over the port of Valetta made it very difficult to re-supply the island. British submarines contributed to forcing the Axis blockade.

This painting features one of these attacks - in the foreground are two British U-class submarines, while HMS Arethusa is in the background.

Pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, Malte va occuper une place importante dans la guerre navale en Méditerranée.
Le port de La Valette sera le théâtre de centaines de raids aériens allemands, rendant le ravitaillement de l' île très difficile. Les sous-marins anglais contribueront à forcer le blocus de l'Axe.

Le tableau représente l'un de ces bombardements et montre en premier plan des sous-marins  de classe U. A l'arrière plan, est figuré le croiseur léger HMS Arethusa.
