The story behind the painting...


German Molch 11-ton one-man midget submarine that carried two 21-inch underslung torpedoes. Electric powered, the boats were designed for coastal operations and were meant to travel submerged at all times. 393 boats, built by AG Weser in Bremen, were completed, the first was delivered on June 12 1944. Molch boats were deployed in the Mediterranean against the allied invasion of the French Riviera (Operation Dragoon). 12 Molch of the K-Verband 411 flotilla attacked on September 25/26 1944 achieving nothing for the loss of 10 craft. The two survivors were destroyed in the allied warship bombardment of San Remo soon after.
