The painting shows a Resolution Class Polaris ballistic missile boat at sea. HMS Resolution was Britain's first nuclear deterrent submarine. She started her maiden patrol in February 1969, carrying out her duties for the next 25 years and was paid off when the new Vanguard Class Trident missile boats started coming into service in the early 1990s. With an 8,400 tons dived displacement, and carrying 16 Polaris missiles, the R Class boats were little more than half the size of the current Vanguards.
