The story behind the painting...

U99 was one of the most famous U-boats of the Second World War.  The commander, Otto Kretschmer, accounted for the greatest total tons of shipping sunk during WW2 and hence earned himself a Knights Cross with Oakleaves and Crossed Swords as well as the nickname of Tonnage King.

During the night of 16/17 March 1941 whilst undertaking its eighth war patrol U-99 was sunk by a depth charge attack by the British Destroyer HMS Walker.
