When the artist first saw the photograph that this painting was based on,
he thought "yes, it is possible to create a really evocative almost romantic image of a submarine."
Another important fact was that it depicts a really beautiful summer's evening on the Firth of Clyde. Believe it or not the sun does shine up here, sometimes. .
