U-Boat War Patrol

This excellent hardback book follows a whole patrol undertaken by U564 - a Type VIIC U-boat captained by the much loved "Teddy" Suhren.   This book contains more than 250 rare photographs charting the boats progress.  The photos are perfectly accompanied by Paterson's easy, yet comprehensive, writing style ensuring the reader becomes fully engrossed in the crews ups and downs throughout their voyage. 

Suitable for both U-boat novices and experts and an absolute must for all U-boat artists and modelers!

Previously information on the U-boat war in this area was scattered and hard to come by.  In this hardback edition Lawrence Paterson presents a full picture of events and gives the reader an insight into the often difficult cooperation between the Japanese and Germans.  Many of the infamous myths of U-boats carrying precious gold, mercury and high ranking Nazi personnel are also covered in this book.  As Paterson fans have come to expect, all the facts and figures are there and yet there is not a hint of dryness as his easy writing style captures your attention from page 1.   And to top it all there is also a wealth of superb photographs - many from a U-boat commander's personal collection and never before published.

This was Paterson's first book and upon reading it U-boat enthusiasts the world over were delighted to realise that a new and talent author had suddenly entered their world.  Paterson is a superb writer bringing history very much alive whilst still skillfully maintaining an unbiased viewpoint.  This book is, as the title suggests, all about Germany's first U-boat flotilla - covering its early formation in 1935 through to its painful cessation 9 years later.   As the reader turns the pages he shares the roller-coaster of joy and tears as he grows familiar with each boat's commander and crew.   A good selection of previously unseen photographs.  Hardback.

Fittingly, the topic for Paterson's second book is the Second U-boat flotilla.  The author allows us to follow the comings and goings and successes and  failures of all the boats in this flotilla together with an insight into the excitement and frustrations experienced by the crew.  Although a natural follow on from his first book, First U-boat Flotilla which closely examines the Type II and Type VII U-boats, this second book concentrates particularly on the Type IXs that dominated this flotilla.  Consequently their is little repitition and the two books can comfortably be read back to back or entirely independently as desired.  Once again, the author has found a great array of rare photographs to accompany the story.
